The Elaine Jones Safety Net Fund
Running a nonprofit in this climate is like walking a tightrope without a safety net.
As we speak, charities in Napa Valley that help hardworking families meet their basic needs for food, housing, and other essential human services are facing significant and sudden funding cuts—at a time when demand for what they offer is increasing.
Most safety net nonprofits rely on government grants and contracts to cover 25 to 50 percent of their budgets, so when state or federal programs are suspended, downsized or eliminated, we feel it intensely right here at home.
But we don’t all feel it the same way. Unfortunately, as funding recedes, it’s the most economically vulnerable among us who suffer the most: seniors, the medically frail, families living paycheck to paycheck. Local nonprofits that serve these populations are doing their best to meet the moment, but they don’t have sufficient cash reserves to replace funding sources that have been reduced or taken away.
Because of this, we’ve launched a special fund to bolster Napa Valley’s most needed nonprofits, and to give them and the people they serve a safety net. We are asking for your help to raise the last $300,000 needed to reach our goal of $2.5 million.
Named in honor of an unmatched champion of the charitable sector, the Elaine Jones Safety Net Fund will make two types of grants to nonprofits providing essential services to our elders, our neighbors, and our children:
- General support grants will be a lifeline for core social services organizations navigating increased client need and reduced government funding.
- Capacity-building grants will help safety net nonprofits move strategically in the direction of greater sustainability—for example, by diversifying revenue sources or making operations more efficient.
